A recent video from Vandal, a prominent video game information platform, has shed new light on the origins of the jump mechanic in video games, challenging a widely held belief. Many gamers commonly attribute the introduction of the jump feature to the iconic 1981 arcade game, Donkey Kong, starring Jumpman (who later became Mario). However, Vandal's analysis reveals that the jump mechanic predates Donkey Kong by several years. The video points to 'Frogs,' an arcade game released in 1978, as an earlier example where players control a frog that jumps to consume insects. Even further back, the true pioneer is identified as 'Steeplechase,' an Atari arcade game launched in 1975. In 'Steeplechase,' players control horses in a race, requiring them to jump over various obstacles to succeed. This historical insight provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of fundamental gameplay mechanics.
