Clearing Fallen Apples: A Crucial Step for Orchard Health

Gardeners are being urged to diligently collect fallen apples from under their trees to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. According to a recent educational video, decaying apples provide an ideal habitat for overwintering pests, including fruit worms, various beetles, and caterpillars. These pests can then emerge in the spring to infest new crops. The video also highlighted that fallen fruit is a breeding ground for common fungal diseases such as scab, moniliosis, and fruit rot. If these diseased fruits are not removed, the infections can persist and lead to more widespread damage to the apple trees and their future harvests. "Leaving fallen apples on the ground is like inviting trouble for your entire orchard," stated a gardening expert in the video. "It creates a perfect environment for pests and diseases to thrive, ultimately jeopardizing your next season's yield and the long-term health of your trees." Experts recommend collecting fallen apples and disposing of them properly, either through separate composting after thermal treatment or by removing them from the garden entirely. This proactive measure is crucial for maintaining a healthy and productive apple orchard.
