Ireland's Housing Crisis: Government Announces Rent Pressure Zone Reform
Ireland's Housing Crisis: Government Announces Rent Pressure Zone Reform Ireland is grappling with a severe housing shortage, leading to record-high rents. Today, the government unveiled sweeping changes to the rent pressure zone (RPZ) system, aiming to address the crisis. Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated, "We desperately need additional supply. We need more people building more apartments." The new plan expands RPZs nationwide, limiting rent increases in existing properties to 2% or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower. However, rents on new builds will only be linked to inflation. The plan also includes restrictions for large landlords with four or more properties, banning no-fault evictions. This measure aims to balance the need for increased supply and renter protection. Opposition parties have criticized the plan, arguing it lacks certainty for tenants. Darlene Lombos, President of the Greater Boston Labor Council, commented, "I think the opposition are a bit confused as to what they're against." Housing charities also warn that the changes could lead to an increase in homelessness. The government's plan represents a significant step in addressing Ireland's complex housing challenges.
