Belgian Teacher Training: A Competency Crisis?

Many aspiring teachers in Belgium are failing basic competency tests, designed for 12-year-olds, in subjects like math, French, and Dutch. These tests are mandatory for entry into teacher training programs. One student interviewed stated, "It was really difficult...far above the level I expected." Katlijne Van der Pas, director of the Thomas More teacher training program, isn't surprised by the results. She points out that 33% of students failed the math portion and 43% failed French. Van der Pas suggests that if the teacher training program can't raise expectations, they should reconsider the entry requirements. This situation highlights a potential problem within the Belgian education system.
