The incident, which occurred around 4:40 pm, prompted a large police response, involving state troopers, Waterbury police, and federal agencies such as the FBI and ATF. Thankfully, police reported no fatalities. Eyewitness News reporter Amanda Callahan, reporting live from the scene, stated, "Five people were shot here at the mall this afternoon. They were all taken to the hospital, and as far as the police chief knows, all of them are expected to survive." Police Chief Neil O'Leary confirmed that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather an escalation of an altercation. He also revealed that the suspect is a male in his twenties, and that he is currently not in custody. The weapon used, a semi-automatic pistol, has not yet been recovered. The mall remains closed for the investigation and authorities are working to clear the building. The large police presence is partially due to numerous people sheltering in place within the mall following the incident.
