Advocates Warn of Fatal Consequences as 988 LGBTQ+ Youth Services Face July 17th Shutdown in Connecticut
West Hartford, CT – A local advocate delivered a passionate address today, condemning the impending shutdown of 988 specialized services for LGBTQ+ young people, set for July 17th. Speaking to a gathering, the advocate, who identified themselves as having personally benefited from 988, stated, "The shutting down of the 988 specialized services for LGBTQ+ young people on July 17th is going to kill kids." They further asserted that this decision represents "a legislative erasure" and "a financial erasure," implying a deliberate attempt to marginalize the community. The speaker highlighted the life-saving impact of 988 for queer and trans youth and stressed that the government’s action sends a clear message that "we should not be here." Despite the looming shutdown, the advocate reminded the community of continued support systems, including The Trevor Project, Trans Lifeline, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, all of which remain operational. "We are each other's lifeline," they urged, encouraging continued mutual support and safety within the community, especially when facing governmental actions perceived as hostile.
