London, UK - Consumer champion 'Which?' has released a new guide highlighting five common household items that should never be placed in a washing machine, offering crucial advice to help consumers protect their cherished belongings from irreversible damage. The guide, presented by a 'Which?' expert, details specific categories of items prone to damage when machine-washed. "Anything with embellishments, like sequins, lace, or glitter, should be kept out of the washing machine as they can easily detach or damage the garment," the expert advised.Suits and ties also made the list, with 'Which?' explaining that even if made from cotton or polyester, the internal interfacing that gives them shape can dissolve in water, leading to distortion. "Ties are also easily shrunk or damaged," the expert added.Materials such as leather, suede, velvet, and rayon are strongly recommended for dry cleaning only. "These fabrics are better off going to the dry cleaners; they'll only get damaged in the washing machine," the expert stated.Certain soft toys, specifically mentioning brands like Jellycats and Beanie Babies, were also highlighted. While some soft toys can be machine-washed, 'Which?' stressed the importance of checking care labels, noting that many popular brands are hand-wash only. Finally, memory foam pillows were identified as unsuitable for machine washing due to the delicate nature of the foam, which can easily tear during the process. The consumer champion urged viewers to always check care labels or consult a professional dry cleaner if unsure about how to clean an item, ensuring longevity and proper care for their belongings.
