Whipsnade Zoo's Asian elephant herd is making a splash as temperatures rise, finding relief and enjoyment in their dedicated pool. Zookeepers at Whipsnade have observed the elephants, including two-year-old Nang Phaya and the impressive 4.5-tonne bull elephant Ming Jung, eagerly embracing their aquatic playtime. 'It's a really beautiful hot sunny day, so naturally they will spend a lot of time in the pool,' explained an elephant keeper. 'It's really good for their skincare, and also it's a really good social opportunity for them to soak, bathe, have a bit of a dip, become bobbing apples almost.' The keeper noted that once the elephants get their 'first toe wet,' they fully immerse themselves, cooling off and engaging in natural behaviors. This refreshing activity not only helps the elephants beat the heat but also provides valuable enrichment and promotes their overall well-being.
