M&M's Debuts First-Ever Freeze-Dried Candies
The new, trendy treat will debut in M&M’s stores on Nov. 10 and nationwide in January 2026.
An online creator, known as Whitepepper Farms, recently shared a video detailing an experiment to freeze-dry five different types of popular candies. The endeavor aimed to explore the unique textures and forms these sweets take after undergoing the freeze-drying process, a method typically used for preserving food. The creator meticulously prepared Haribo Peaches, peach rings, gummy sharks, Nerds Gummy Clusters, and M&Ms, arranging them on trays. Larger gummy candies were cut into smaller pieces to ensure uniform drying. Once prepared, the candies were loaded into a specialized freeze-dryer, which was set to a dedicated "candy mode." While most candies transformed as expected, puffing up and becoming airy, the M&Ms presented an unforeseen challenge. "As soon as the freeze-dryer was under vacuum, they pretty much just split open and the chocolate just sat there and boiled the entire time it was freeze-drying," explained the creator in the video. This resulted in M&Ms that appeared "like they've been in the sun for too long," making them unsuitable for consumption. The other candies, including the peach gummies which "blew up in the freeze-dryer," successfully achieved the desired freeze-dried texture. The creator mentioned these freeze-dried treats were intended as payment for babysitting, highlighting a novel use for the processed confections.
