FBI Busts Chinese Bio-Weapon Smuggling Ring
FBI Arrests Chinese Nationals for Smuggling Toxic Fungus Detroit, MI – In a significant biosecurity operation, the FBI arrested two Chinese nationals, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, for smuggling the toxic fungus Fusarium graminearum into the United States. The fungus, capable of causing devastating crop damage and health problems in humans and livestock, was intercepted at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on July 27, 2024. The FBI alleges the pair planned to conduct research on the fungus at a University of Michigan laboratory. Electronic evidence uncovered during the investigation revealed prior smuggling attempts by Jian and detailed communications between Jian and Liu regarding the shipment of biological materials. According to court documents, Liu admitted to smuggling the pathogen, stating he intended to use it for research. Jian, Liu's girlfriend, initially denied any knowledge of the smuggling operation but later admitted to receiving government funding for research on the pathogen in China. Both suspects face charges of conspiracy, smuggling, making false statements to investigators, and visa fraud. This case highlights the vulnerability of the US agricultural sector to bioterrorism and the importance of strong biosecurity measures.
