In Australia, the beginning of Spring signals fresh flowers, longer days, and, unfortunately, magpie attacks.
A resident of Maidstone, Australia, Gabrielle, has become the target of an unusually aggressive magpie, with multiple attacks captured by her home doorbell camera. Bird expert Professor Emeritus Darryl Jones, upon reviewing the footage, characterized the incident as "one of the worst" magpie attacks he has ever witnessed. "That's a really vicious magpie she's got, it's really going for her, which is horrible," Jones told Yahoo News Australia. Gabrielle reported three prior encounters before the most recent, widely shared video. Magpies possess the remarkable ability to distinguish individual humans for extended periods, and male birds are known to exhibit territorial aggression during nesting season, typically lasting a few weeks. Professor Jones suggested a potential method to mitigate the attacks: "She lives in the territory of the magpie, and by feeding it and making it associate her with something nice, it could turn its behaviour around." The resident expressed perplexity regarding the sudden and persistent aggression.
