Ukrenergo Under Scrutiny: Allegations of Multi-Million Hryvnia Salaries Amid Wartime Energy Crisis
Kyiv, Ukraine - A recent video by Yuriy Korolchuk, founder of the Institute of Energy Strategies, has brought to light alleged financial irregularities within "Ukrenergo," Ukraine's state energy company, during the critical year of 2022. According to Korolchuk, a State Audit Service report for 2022 uncovered instances of employees receiving salaries for multiple positions. He specifically cited a board member, Yurkov, who reportedly received a staggering 20 million UAH in salary. Korolchuk, speaking directly to the camera, drew a stark contrast between these alleged lavish salaries and the public appeals made by "Ukrenergo" during the winter of 2022-2023, urging citizens to conserve electricity by disconnecting appliances like boilers and air conditioners. "This is the price of those super-tips for the people in 2022-2023 to switch off boilers and air conditioners," Korolchuk stated, implying a hypocrisy in the company's financial management during a period of national hardship and active warfare. He further suggested that preliminary data for 2023 and 2024 indicates that up to a billion hryvnias might have been spent on similar "needs," not exclusively salaries. The expert questioned the justification for such expenditures, especially when the nation's future was uncertain. The allegations raise concerns about accountability and transparency in state-owned enterprises, particularly during times of war when public trust and resource management are paramount.
