New York City, US - Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani has officially launched his campaign for Mayor of New York City, presenting a platform focused on alleviating the city's escalating cost of living. In a recent campaign video, Mamdani sharply criticized the current administration, including Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, for what he describes as a failure to prioritize the needs of working-class New Yorkers. "Every politician says New York is the greatest city in the world. But what good is that if no one can afford to live here?" Mamdani stated, highlighting the struggles faced by residents. He identified the cost of living as "the real crisis," citing exorbitant rent and childcare expenses as major burdens. Mamdani also pointed to the city's public transit system, claiming that New York has "the slowest buses in the nation," which he says robs New Yorkers of their time and sanity. His proposed solutions include making buses fast and free, providing universal childcare at no cost, and implementing a rent freeze for all rent-stabilized tenants. Mamdani asserted that current political leaders "care about their donors" and "themselves" rather than the working class who maintain the city. He concluded with a message of hope, stating, "We can afford to bring down the rent, have world-class public transit, and make it easier to raise our families. We can do all of that and so much more because this is New York. We can afford to dream."
