Hajj Scam Costs Malaysian Man RM71,000
Malaysia: Hajj Package Scam Leaves Man RM71,000 Out of Pocket Kuala Lumpur, May 30, 2025 – A recent Hajj package scam in Malaysia has resulted in a significant financial loss for one individual. A man fell victim to the fraud, losing RM71,000. This incident marks the first reported case of its kind this year, according to Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali, Acting Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) in Bukit Aman. "This is the first report we've received this year," stated Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali in a press conference. He attributes the rise in such scams to the Saudi Arabian government's reduction in the number of Umrah visas issued for this year's Hajj season. The JSJK press conference highlighted the increasing prevalence of Hajj package scams, urging caution among potential pilgrims. In 2023, 11 cases were reported, totaling RM649,631 in losses. While the number of cases decreased to 4 in 2024, the total losses rose to RM874,100, underscoring the financial impact of these fraudulent schemes. Authorities are working to combat this issue and protect potential Hajj pilgrims from further victimization.
