Malaysia Proposes Nationwide ASEAN Lanes to Boost Tourism
Malaysia's Tourism Push: Expanding ASEAN Lanes for a Smoother Tourist Experience June 5, 2025 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Datuk Azlie Halim, Deputy President of the Malaysia International Tourism Development Association (MITDA), has called for the expansion of ASEAN Lanes to all major entry points in Malaysia. Currently, these expedited lanes are primarily located at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2. "The ASEAN Lane needs to be expanded to all major entry points to ensure a smooth and efficient arrival process for tourists from ASEAN countries," Halim stated. He emphasized that this expansion would not only improve the tourist experience but also contribute to stronger regional ties. Halim's proposal includes the development of a dedicated digital application for ASEAN tourists, allowing for streamlined booking and access to special ticket deals at major tourist destinations. This would further enhance the convenience and appeal of visiting Malaysia for ASEAN travelers. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to promote cultural understanding and avoid diplomatic tensions, as seen in past incidents like the 2017 Rasa Sayang song protest between Malaysia and Indonesia. By focusing on improving the overall experience and fostering stronger regional relationships, Malaysia aims to boost tourism and solidify its position as a leading destination within ASEAN.
