Chinese Nationals Charged with Smuggling Deadly Fungus into US
Two Chinese nationals have been charged with smuggling a dangerous plant pathogen, Fusarium graminearum, into the United States. The fungus, capable of causing billions of dollars in crop damage worldwide and posing health risks to humans, was discovered in the luggage of one suspect at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. According to court documents, the suspect, Zun Yong Liu, admitted to smuggling the pathogen for research purposes at the University of Michigan, with the assistance of his girlfriend, Yung Chin Jin. FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that this case is a stark reminder of the Chinese Communist Party's continued efforts to infiltrate American institutions and compromise the nation's food supply. The University of Michigan has confirmed its cooperation with the investigation and asserted that it received no funding from the Chinese government for the research. This incident underscores the ongoing concerns about biosecurity and the potential for malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities in the US agricultural system.
