Community Mourns Fallen Officer: Church Rallies Around Family of Slain Chicago Police Officer
The tragic death of Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera has sent shockwaves through the city. On Thursday night, while pursuing a suspect at 82nd and Drexel, Officer Rivera was accidentally shot by a fellow officer's weapon. Adrian Rucker, the suspect, was charged and denied pretrial release on Sunday. The incident has prompted an outpouring of support from the community, particularly from Rivera’s church, Faithworld Church. Pastor Jennifer Cruz expressed her shock, stating, "I was just shocked. We’re still shocked; we can’t believe it." The video shows a service at Faithworld Church where prayers were offered for Rivera’s family and her fellow officers. Rich Santiago, a friend of Rivera’s who lost his son during COVID, spoke of her genuine nature and the shared grief felt by the community. The judge ordered Rucker to remain in custody. Alderman Ray Lopez emphasized that a message needs to be sent that such incidents will not be tolerated. Rivera’s mother attended Rucker’s court appearance but did not comment publicly. The family is proceeding with funeral arrangements later this week.
