Naval Academy Plebes Conquer Greased Monument in Annual Tradition
Annapolis, Maryland – May 14, 2025. The annual Herndon Monument climb at the U.S. Naval Academy concluded successfully today. First-year students, known as "plebes," participated in this time-honored tradition, working together to conquer the greased 21-foot monument. One student, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "It was the hardest thing I've ever done, but the feeling of accomplishment at the top was incredible." The successful climb signifies their transformation into midshipmen. The event drew a large crowd, and the atmosphere was electric with anticipation and excitement. The tradition continues to symbolize teamwork, perseverance, and the spirit of the Naval Academy.
