Naval Academy Plebes Conquer Greased Monument in Annual Tradition
ANNAPOLIS, MD – May 15, 2025 – The U.S. Naval Academy witnessed its annual Herndon Monument climb, a time-honored tradition where first-year midshipmen, known as plebes, attempt to replace a plebe cap with an upperclassman's hat. This year, the Class of 2028 faced the challenge head-on, despite the monument being slathered in 200 pounds of vegetable shortening. "It was intense," said one participating plebe, who wished to remain anonymous. "The grease was incredibly slippery, and the water spray made it even harder." The event is a test of teamwork and perseverance, reflecting the academy's emphasis on camaraderie and resilience. The successful culmination of the climb marks a significant milestone for the Class of 2028, symbolizing their transition into the upperclassman ranks. The event concluded with cheers and celebrations, marking a successful completion of this unique tradition.
