ISTANBUL – Passengers from a Gaza aid flotilla, including renowned environmental activist Greta Thunberg, have come forward with serious allegations of mistreatment by Israeli authorities. The activists, who were part of the 'Sumud Flotilla,' described their experiences upon their return, detailing what they called "cruel" and "disgusting" treatment. One activist, speaking to reporters, stated that Greta Thunberg was "dragged very intensely" and had an Israeli flag placed on her face, adding that authorities "treated her like an animal." Another participant, Windfield Beaver, an American activist with the Sumud Flotilla, corroborated these claims, noting that Thunberg was "draped in an Israeli flag" and "pushed and pulled wherever they wanted" for what he perceived as propaganda. He recounted witnessing Thunberg being "shoved really aggressively" into a private room, which was then entered by Ben Gvir (likely Itamar Ben-Gvir, an Israeli politician). Further allegations of harsh conditions in detention were made by Ilya Balqis, a Malaysian activist. She described the treatment in prison as "very disgusting," citing "so-called protocol" designed to make them feel degraded. Balqis reported that activists were forced to change clothes and were held in a cage under direct sunlight. Crucially, she claimed that essential medication was confiscated, and they were denied clean water and necessary medicine. In a particularly distressing account, Balqis stated that a seriously ill Muslim woman in dire need of medication was denied it, with authorities allegedly remarking, "if she didn't die yet, then it's okay." She also mentioned that detainees were forced to drink tap water from the toilet. The activists called upon the international community to acknowledge and address the alleged cruelty by Israeli authorities. The video also shows scenes of supporters waving Palestinian and Turkish flags, chanting slogans in solidarity with the flotilla members.
