Kenya's Makueni County Launches Ambitious Green Jobs Initiative
Makueni County Launches "Climate Works" Initiative to Create Jobs and Combat Climate Change Makueni County, Kenya, June 6, 2025 – In a significant move to address both unemployment and environmental concerns, Makueni County launched the "Climate Works" initiative. The program, spearheaded by Kindiki Osingo, aims to create thousands of jobs for young people while simultaneously tackling climate change through environmental projects. Osingo's speech, captured in a recent video, outlines the initiative's ambitious goals. "We want Climate Works to take over the jobs of climate change mitigation, planting trees, cleaning up our towns, and improving our environment," Osingo stated. The program began by employing 20,000 young people in Nairobi for tasks such as cleaning the Nairobi River and planting trees. The county plans to expand the program to other counties, aiming to provide at least 10,000 jobs in each. This will provide much-needed employment opportunities and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. The initiative is a testament to the county's commitment to sustainable development and youth empowerment. By combining economic growth with environmental protection, "Climate Works" offers a promising model for other regions facing similar challenges.
