Brazilian Tourist Dies After 900-Meter Fall on Indonesia's Mount Rinjani, Family Demands Safety Probe
LOMBOK, Indonesia – A climbing expedition on Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia, turned tragic with the death of 26-year-old Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins. Marins, an avid nature explorer, was ascending the popular peak with friends when she reportedly slipped and fell approximately 900 meters down a steep slope. While she initially survived the fall, severe weather conditions and thick fog significantly hampered rescue efforts, preventing teams from reaching her in a timely manner. "We wanted to bring in a helicopter to lift her out, but the weather conditions did not allow it," stated Muhammad Syafi'i, head of Indonesia's search and rescue team, highlighting the difficulties faced. After several days of arduous attempts, Indonesian authorities announced the recovery of Marins' body. Her family has since called for a comprehensive investigation into the safety protocols and standards on Mount Rinjani. The volcano, which attracts thousands of climbers annually, has unfortunately been the site of several fatal incidents in past years, raising concerns about climber safety on its challenging terrain.
