Dermatologist Challenges Daily Moisturizer Use, Citing Skin Dependency A recent video by dermatologist Alex Docampo has sparked discussion in the skincare community by asserting that daily facial moisturizer use could lead to skin dependency, potentially weakening its natural hydration capabilities. Dr. Docampo, known for "debunking myths," highlighted a scientific study published in "Dermatol Ther (Heidelb)" in 2020, which investigated skin recovery after the discontinuation of long-term moisturizer application. According to Dr. Docampo, the study revealed surprising results. Participants who had regularly used moisturizers experienced dryness, redness, and flaking after just one day without the product. Their skin then took up to three weeks to recover its natural balance, provided no moisturizer was reapplied. "Many people confuse having dry facial skin with having dehydrated oily skin, which is more frequent," Dr. Docampo explained in his video. "Here, the problem is really excess sebum, not a lack of external hydration." He further cautioned that applying excessive amounts of moisturizers could aggravate skin problems like rosacea, potentially favoring the growth of Demodex mites. Dr. Docampo advocates for a simpler cosmetic routine, focusing on "truly effective and simple active ingredients" rather than relying heavily on daily moisturizers for all skin types. This perspective challenges a long-held belief within the beauty industry, suggesting a shift towards understanding the skin's natural functions.
