A prominent Romanian politician, Andrei Gușă, has raised significant concerns regarding reports that the European Commission intends to proceed with Ukraine's European Union accession process, potentially overriding Hungary's veto. Speaking from a formal setting, Gușă asserted that such a move would be "illegal and a grave precedent," fundamentally challenging the principle of unanimity that underpins the European Union's decision-making framework. He specifically cited a proposal, reportedly supported by Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, to allow a qualified majority vote for Ukraine's accession. Gușă argued that this mechanism is contrary to existing EU law and would severely erode the sovereignty of member states. Furthermore, he criticized recent statements attributed to Romania's Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, concerning an impending war, suggesting that such declarations do not serve Romania's best interests. Gușă reiterated that the EU's foundation rests on respecting the national laws and sovereignty of each member state, and any attempt to circumvent these principles would significantly weaken the bloc.
