Giant Stingray Stranded in Rota's Corrales Sparks Community Rescue Effort
ROTA, Spain – A massive black stingray, measuring an estimated 2.5 meters in length and weighing over 120 kilograms, was discovered stranded in a shallow pool during low tide in the historic Corrales de Rota. The impressive marine creature, identified as a black stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca), became trapped as the tide receded, leaving it in a precarious situation. Local residents, known as “Corraleros,” quickly mobilized to assist the struggling animal. They were observed diligently pouring buckets of oxygenated water into the pool to ensure the stingray could breathe. "The stingray isn't moving much. Hours are passing, and the water is getting lower," stated Andrés Barba, who documented the rescue efforts. "We are trying to keep it oxygenated, and it's a bit complicated, but we hope it can survive until the tide comes in." The stingray's immense size, confirmed by measurements taken by the rescuers, highlights the significance of the incident. Efforts are ongoing to sustain the animal until the high tide returns, allowing it to swim back into deeper waters. The community's dedication to preserving marine life in the traditional Corrales de Rota underscores the area's rich natural heritage.
