Spanish authorities have successfully dismantled a sophisticated criminal organization involved in widespread fuel adulteration and tax evasion across the Levante region. The two-year investigation, dubbed "Operation Tenk," culminated in the arrest of 18 individuals and the implication of 40 companies. Fuel was illegally imported from countries including Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Lithuania, falsely declared as lubricants or oils to bypass European Union taxes. Upon arrival in Spain, this adulterated fuel was mixed with other components at clandestine depots in Murcia, Abanilla, and Silla (Valencia), before being distributed to numerous low-cost gas stations in Murcia, Almería, Alicante, and Valencia. Experts warn that this compromised fuel is highly detrimental to vehicle engines and poses significant threats to both the environment and public health. Residents' complaints about unusual truck traffic in Abarán initially triggered the investigation.
