Panama: Major Drug and Illegal Mining Bust in Guna Yala
Panamanian Authorities Bust Illegal Mining and Drug Trafficking Camp in Guna Yala A joint operation by Panama's National Border Service (SENAFRONT) has resulted in the dismantling of a clandestine camp in the Guna Yala region, allegedly involved in illegal mining and drug trafficking. The operation, codenamed ODIN N°1, led to the apprehension of 37 Colombian citizens, including seven minors. Authorities seized 15 small bags of suspected gold, a digital scale, two shotguns (one caliber 20 and one homemade), ammunition, a glass container, suspected marijuana, and three motobombas. "This operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting Panama's natural resources and borders," stated a SENAFRONT spokesperson. Environmental damage was also noted in the area due to the illegal activities. All those apprehended have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation. The operation underscores the ongoing challenges Panama faces in combating illegal activities in its remote regions, particularly those impacting its environment and indigenous communities.
