Panama City's Water Crisis: Consumption Soars, Conservation Urged
Panama City Faces Water Crisis: Consumption Soars to Alarming Levels Panama City, Colón, and the western region of Panama are facing a critical water shortage. The director of the National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN), Rutilio Villarreal, recently warned about alarmingly high water consumption rates. He stated that consumption has "skyrocketed" to 90-100 gallons per person daily, significantly exceeding the recommended 50-52 gallons. Villarreal emphasized the need for immediate conservation measures to avoid jeopardizing the water supply. "This is excessive," Villarreal said in an interview with TVN's Radar program. He urged citizens to use water more responsibly, highlighting that the current consumption levels threaten the sustainability of the water supply. The situation underscores the need for public awareness campaigns and stricter water management policies to mitigate the ongoing crisis and ensure a reliable supply for the future. The IDAAN is currently working on various initiatives to improve water management and address the growing demand.
