Azuero Water Crisis: Four Plants Shut Down Due to Contamination Azuero, Panama - June 9, 2025 - Four water treatment plants in Azuero, Panama, have been temporarily shut down due to contamination of the La Villa River, the primary water source for the region. The shutdown is impacting the districts of Chitré, Los Santos, Guararé, Las Tablas, and Macaracas, leaving thousands without access to clean drinking water. Minister of Health, Fernando Boyd Galindo, and the director of the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan), Rutilio Villarreal, visited the affected areas today to assess the situation. "We are evaluating alternatives to provide water to the population," stated Minister Galindo. The video shows the officials inspecting the water treatment plants, which are currently paralyzed. Idaan is currently distributing bottled water to affected residents. Director Villarreal explained, "We are starting one of the motors to begin production at the Roberto Reyna plant at 50% capacity, following protocols, until the laboratory results allow us to gradually increase production." In addition, Idaan is working to activate community wells to supplement the water supply. This water shortage has been ongoing for 13 days, causing significant inconvenience to the residents of Azuero. The situation highlights the importance of clean water infrastructure and the challenges faced when water sources are compromised.
