Brisbane, Australia – A recent incident in Brisbane highlights the growing risks associated with online marketplaces, as a young woman recounted her experience of nearly falling victim to a suspected scam on Facebook Marketplace. The individual, who had recently moved to Brisbane, was searching for a bed frame and mattress when she discovered a listing for a seemingly too-good-to-be-true deal at $260. "I just moved to Brisbane and I need a bed," she explained in a video detailing the event. Excited by the prospect of acquiring a new bed frame and mattress at such a low price, she contacted the seller. After confirming availability and receiving an address in Kedron, approximately 20 minutes away, she and her mother set off to view the item. However, while en route, the seller reportedly demanded a $50 deposit to secure the bed, citing high interest from other potential buyers. The woman expressed her reluctance to pay a deposit before seeing the item, stating, "I just want to come have a look first." Despite her insistence, the seller maintained the demand for a deposit. Upon arriving at the provided address, the woman and her mother found no one home. They attempted to ring the doorbell and text the seller multiple times, but received no response. Eventually, the seller texted back, reiterating the need for a deposit. It was at this point that the woman realized she was likely being scammed. "I'm at your house! I'm at your door!" she exclaimed in frustration, before concluding that the situation was a "very, very, very, very much scammy" and that they were likely at a random person's porch. The incident serves as a cautionary tale for users of online marketplaces, emphasizing the importance of verifying sellers and avoiding upfront payments or deposits before inspecting goods in person. The woman ultimately left without a bed, but with a valuable lesson learned about online transaction safety.
