Madrid, Spain – The National Police of Spain has issued a crucial public service announcement, detailing a prevalent online scam that targets individuals selling their vehicles through digital platforms. The warning, disseminated via their official channels, highlights how fraudsters exploit popular mobile payment systems like Bizum to defraud unsuspecting sellers.A police officer featured in the announcement explained the typical modus operandi: "Minutes after you publish your car for sale online, an interested party calls you. They express urgency, claim to be from your city, and say they want to reserve the car immediately." The scammer then builds trust, often citing a need for a "work justification" to show their boss to secure the appointment. The critical moment arrives when the scammer offers to send a reservation payment via Bizum. However, as the officer clarified, "Instead of receiving the money, it is the scammer who is requesting it from you." This subtle reversal in the transaction, often overlooked in haste, leads sellers to inadvertently authorize a payment to the scammer instead of receiving funds. The National Police urges citizens to exercise extreme caution: "Always review Bizum operations carefully and pay close attention before accepting. Do not fall victim to urgency, and if you have doubts, report it." This proactive warning aims to prevent financial losses and raise awareness about the deceptive tactics employed by cybercriminals in the online marketplace.
