Malaysia and Laos Accelerate ASEAN Power Grid Project Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – In a significant development for regional energy cooperation, Malaysia and Laos have agreed to fast-track the second phase of the ASEAN power grid project. The announcement was made on May 25, 2025, during a visit by Laotian Minister Sonexay Siphandone to Malaysia. The agreement, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, will bring significant benefits to the region. "Both countries have agreed to accelerate the implementation of the second phase of the ASEAN power grid project for the benefit of the entire region," said Ibrahim. The first phase of the project involved an undersea cable from Vietnam to Northern Malaya. The second phase is expected to extend the grid's reach to benefit Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, connecting them to Malaya and Singapore. Minister Siphandone's three-day visit to Malaysia included an official welcome ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, where he was greeted by Prime Minister Ibrahim and national anthems of both countries were played.
