A recent online video by content creator @celulau.bio has sparked discussion regarding public restroom hygiene, specifically the use of hand dryers. The video, which has garnered over 10,000 views, claims that hand dryers can exacerbate germ spread rather than prevent it. According to the video's presenter, "the majority of the time, people in public restrooms do not close the toilet lid when flushing, if there is one." This action, they explain, releases "countless droplets full of bacteria and microorganisms suspended in the air." The core concern raised is that hand dryers then draw in this contaminated air and blow it directly onto recently washed hands. "Instead of cleaning your hands, you are making them even worse," the presenter states, suggesting that bacteria from other people's bodily waste can end up on one's hands. The video cites "various studies" indicating that powerful hand dryers can disperse microbes over a meter, contaminating surrounding surfaces. As a more hygienic alternative, the presenter strongly recommends using paper towels. "Paper towels eliminate moisture quickly, reduce the transfer of microorganisms, and can be used to avoid touching contaminated surfaces like taps, door handles, and light switches after washing your hands," they advise. The video also offers a less common but logical piece of advice: "wash your hands before using the toilet," to prevent transferring germs from your hands to intimate areas.
