Ghana's Education System Needs a Reboot: A Call for Curriculum Reform
Ghana's Education System Faces Reform Calls: NPP Official Advocates for Curriculum Overhaul Accra, Ghana – Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for a complete overhaul of Ghana’s education system. In an interview with Channel One TV, Aboagye criticized the rigid structure of the current curriculum, arguing that it fails to adequately prepare students for the demands of the modern world. He stated, “We should dismantle this whole curriculum and make it more learner-friendly.” Aboagye’s concerns center on the lack of flexibility in subject choices. He recounted his own experience, illustrating the limitations imposed on students. He contrasted this with the more flexible Cambridge curriculum, where students have greater freedom to choose subjects that align with their interests and career aspirations. He added, “The flexibility that these students in the Cambridge curriculum have, we don’t have. From year one all the way to secondary school.” Beyond curriculum reform, Aboagye also highlighted the need for modernization of school infrastructure. He questioned the continued construction of basic schools using outdated designs. The video concludes with Aboagye expressing confidence in the government’s commitment to modernizing the educational system. This call for reform comes as Ghana’s education system faces increasing scrutiny. Aboagye’s comments are likely to spark debate about the best way to improve educational outcomes in the country and prepare students for a rapidly changing global landscape.
