From Turkish Sun to UK Shores: A Former Holiday Rep's Emotional Journey Home

Former Thomas Cook employee, Clairehkop, recently shared her personal journey of leaving a beloved job in Marmaris, Turkey, after eight summers and returning to the United Kingdom. Her story highlights the challenges and emotional toll of such a significant life change, particularly when company policies shifted.Clairehkop, who worked for Thomas Cook, explained that a new 'two-year rule' prevented her from working more than two consecutive years in the same destination. This policy change, coupled with the loss of benefits like flights, accommodation, and bonuses when transitioning to agency employment, significantly impacted her decision. "Thomas Cook always provided you with flights at the beginning and end of the season, accommodation, and even a live-out allowance," she stated, detailing the benefits she lost. After her final season in Marmaris in 2014, she was placed in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. While she liked these destinations, she didn't want to return. "I just thought my time's up, I'm meant to move on," she reflected, emphasizing her belief in following one's path.Returning to the UK in November 2014 was a difficult adjustment. "That whole year was so painful, it was so horrible to be back in the UK," she recounted, describing the feeling of being "boring and depressing" compared to her life overseas. She initially struggled to settle, despite trying to "put myself out there."However, her path eventually led her to a reception supervisor role at a hotel, allowing her to stay within the tourism industry and customer service. She later met her Turkish husband, which she credits with helping her settle back in. "I loved being with him because it reminded me so much of my past," she said, adding that she feels she hasn't lost those eight years abroad because her husband brings back those memories. Clairehkop hopes to return to Turkey one day, acknowledging that timing is everything, much like having children.
