Guatemalan School Renovation Stalled for Years: Students Left in Limbo
INEB Alameda Norte School Renovation Delayed for Years, Leaving Students Without Classes Guatemala City, June 7, 2025 – A school renovation project in Zone 18 of Guatemala City has been stalled for years, leaving 169 students without access to education. INEB Alameda Norte, the school in question, was slated for an 11-month renovation beginning in 2020, but remains incomplete. A recent visit by Guatemalan Deputy Cristian Álvarez GT revealed the extent of the problem. "The municipality hasn't enforced any bonds or wanted to bother the friendly company," Álvarez stated, referring to the lack of accountability for the delayed project. Doña Ofelia, a local resident, echoed the frustration, saying, "It's been years since they said they would fix the institute, and here the neighbors are, waiting for them to finish fixing it." The school's condition has deteriorated, with Doña Ofelia mentioning issues such as water damage and the presence of rats. Álvarez presented official documents showing the municipality's responsibility for the project. The situation highlights systemic issues affecting the education of Guatemalan children. The deputy plans to invite the project's director to discuss the matter further, pushing for a resolution to this long-standing problem and the return of students to their school.
