Millions of Liters of Mislabeled Oil Seized in Romania
Romanian Authorities Seize Millions of Liters of Mislabeled Oil On June 4th, 2025, Cristian Popescu Piedone, head of Romania’s National Consumer Protection Authority (ANPC), announced a major operation targeting the illegal sale of rapeseed oil mislabeled as olive oil. The operation, which took place at an undisclosed location in Romania, resulted in the seizure of millions of liters of the mislabeled product. "For three years, this oil has been imported and sold as olive oil," stated Piedone in a video documenting the raid. "Millions of bottles, millions of lei in profit, and millions of Romanians deceived." The video shows pallets upon pallets of oil containers marked with ANPC seizure tape. The ANPC is working with Greek authorities to investigate the manufacturer and ensure that this type of fraud is stopped. The ANPC’s actions are expected to result in significant fines for the company responsible. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of verifying food product labels and the ongoing efforts to protect consumers from fraud.
