Counterfeit Olive Oil Scam Exposed in Naples: Lampante Oil Sold as Extra Virgin
Naples, Italy – In a recent investigation by the popular Italian satirical news program Striscia la Notizia, a shocking case of food fraud has come to light. Investigative journalist Luca Abete uncovered the sale of lampante oil, a type of oil unfit for human consumption, being passed off as high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The oil, sold at €5 per liter, was deceptively labeled with the Coldiretti brand, a major Italian agricultural organization. Coldiretti has confirmed that the label is entirely counterfeit. During an undercover investigation, Mr. Abete purchased the oil from a seller who admitted to selling it through Facebook. When questioned about the safety of the oil, the seller casually stated, "I use it to make meatballs for my children. It's good!" This statement highlights the grave risks associated with consuming this potentially harmful oil. The report serves as a stark warning to consumers about the importance of verifying the authenticity of food products and underscores the pervasive nature of food fraud. The investigation is a testament to the dedication of journalists in protecting consumers from deceptive practices and ensuring food safety.
