Apokaliptični prizori i nevjerica u Mimicama, Marušićima i Pisku
MIMICE, CROATIA – Coastal communities in Mimice, Marušićima, and Pisak are grappling with the aftermath of a devastating wildfire that swept through the region, leaving a trail of destruction and disbelief. Residents recount harrowing experiences of escaping the rapidly advancing flames, with many losing their homes and possessions. One elderly resident, aged 94, shared her ordeal, stating, "It was as if some higher power was protecting us." She described the immense difficulty of moving due to her age as the fire approached their home. Another resident expressed the profound loss, emphasizing that a house is more than just walls and a roof; it's a home where life unfolds. He added, "My house is almost totally damaged. Luckily, we had insurance." The fire, which local authorities suspect was intentionally set, caused widespread devastation. "We were aware as soon as we ran out of the house that there would be no salvation here," said one resident, describing the thick smoke and visible flames behind their home. He recounted how he and his wife barely managed to escape with only their phones, documents, and a backpack, driving through smoke to reach safety. A local firefighter from Omiš confirmed the extensive damage, noting, "There is a lot of damage to people's property, that is the biggest problem." While human lives were not lost, one firefighter sustained burns to his face. The official stressed the importance of public vigilance, stating, "Every valid report is worth gold to us." He acknowledged the immense help from residents and volunteers who left their jobs and apartments to assist in fighting the fires and protecting property. The landscape around the affected areas is now blackened, with olive trees and other vegetation reduced to ash.
