The Curious History of Jaén's "Ni Poyas"

Jaén, Spain: Uncovering the Curious History Behind the Saying 'Ni Poyas' The quaint city of Jaén, nestled in the Andalusian region of Spain, holds a fascinating secret within its ancient streets. The expression "ni poyas," commonly used in Jaén, translates roughly to "nothing at all." But its origin is far from ordinary, rooted in the daily lives of 15th-century residents. In that era, home bread-making was widespread. However, not every household owned an oven. Those without had to utilize communal ovens, paying a small tax for the service. This tax was known as the "poya." "It's a small piece of dough, about the size of your hand," explains Desirée Lara, a local content creator who sheds light on the saying in her recent TikTok video. "That's all they could afford to bake." A baker named Manuel, frustrated by people taking small portions of dough, decided to take matters into his own hands. He started providing larger portions, effectively ending the practice of people taking tiny amounts of dough. This action, born out of frustration, inadvertently gave rise to the expression "ni poyas," used to express a complete lack of something. Lara's video, which has garnered significant attention, not only reveals this intriguing piece of Jaén's history but also highlights the enduring power of local traditions. The story of Manuel's rebellion against small portions of dough is a charming reminder of how everyday events can shape cultural expressions.
