Chilean Lawmakers Push for "Autopréstamo" to Aid Struggling Families
Santiago, Chile – Deputies Rubén Oyarzo and an unnamed colleague have publicly reiterated their support for the "Autopréstamo" project, a legislative proposal aimed at providing financial relief to Chilean families amidst the current economic crisis. The initiative, described as a "responsible project," would allow individuals to access a portion of their pension savings as a loan. Under the proposed "Autopréstamo," affiliates could withdraw up to 5 million Chilean pesos or 10% of their total provisional savings. This amount would be repaid through future contributions over a maximum period of seven years, ensuring that the long-term pension is not permanently impacted. Deputy Oyarzo highlighted that the project seeks to assist emergent middle-class families who are struggling with the increasing cost of living. His colleague added that the "Autopréstamo" was initially included as a measure in the provisional reform but was subsequently eliminated in the Senate without clear justification. Both lawmakers emphasized the urgent need for this support, stressing that it is a loan with a clear repayment mechanism, distinct from a direct withdrawal of funds. They assert that providing concrete solutions to the public's needs is a duty, not populism.
