Neurologist's Top 3 Nighttime Habits to Avoid for Optimal Brain Health

Neurologist Reveals 3 Nighttime Habits to Avoid for Better Brain Health A leading neurologist, Dr. Bing, has shared vital insights into three common nighttime practices that could be inadvertently harming your brain health. In a recent video, Dr. Bing, a Mayo Clinic-trained physician-scientist and epidemiologist, outlined simple yet impactful changes individuals can make to safeguard their cognitive well-being. Firstly, Dr. Bing advises against blasting white noise machines at high volumes. He explains that prolonged exposure to loud noise, even white noise, can lead to hearing damage over time. "Hearing loss is one of the biggest risk factors for dementia later in life," he stated, recommending a maximum volume of 50 decibels, which can be checked using smartphone apps or smartwatches. Secondly, Dr. Bing cautions against leaving night lights on throughout the night, especially those emitting blue or white light. He elaborated that such artificial light can suppress melatonin production, spike blood sugar levels, and keep the brain in a state of "awake mode." As an alternative, he suggests using motion-sensing amber night lights, which only activate when needed and do not disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythm. Lastly, the neurologist highlighted the dangers of getting up too quickly from bed or the toilet, particularly during the night. This rapid movement can cause orthostatic hypotension, a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to fainting and potentially serious brain bleeds. Dr. Bing recommends a slow transition: "Try to sit up, dangle your legs off the bed for a few seconds, get up and wait a few seconds to get your balance, and then go." This simple step can prevent falls and related injuries. Dr. Bing's advice underscores the importance of mindful nighttime routines for long-term brain health, offering practical tips easily integrated into daily life.
