Benadryl's Changing Role: Newer Allergy Meds Offer Safer Alternatives
Diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl, revolutionized allergy treatment upon its introduction. However, newer antihistamines now offer comparable effectiveness with fewer side effects, especially for children and the elderly. This has led some countries, such as Germany and Sweden, to restrict access to diphenhydramine. "Newer antihistamines like cetirizine, loratadine, and fexofenadine offer similar allergy relief with fewer side effects and longer duration," explains Doctor Sood, a board-certified MD. Major health guidelines now advise against the routine use of diphenhydramine for individuals over 65. This shift reflects a growing understanding of the drug's risks and the availability of safer alternatives. The recommendation isn't to declare Benadryl useless, but rather to encourage patients to discuss the best options with their doctors.
