A popular online trend promoting lemon juice as a natural hair lightener has been met with strong warnings from medical professionals. The hack, which involves applying lemon juice to hair and exposing it to sunlight, is gaining traction on social media platforms. However, dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu has highlighted significant risks associated with this method. According to Dr. Liu, lemon juice is highly acidic and can lead to severe scalp irritation and increased hair breakage. Furthermore, she explained that applying lemon juice to the skin, especially the scalp, and then going out in the sun can cause a condition known as phytophotodermatitis, often referred to as 'margarita burn.' This reaction can result in painful, severe sunburns. Dr. Liu emphasized that while the combination of lemon juice and UV light does bleach hair, it does so by damaging the hair fibers. This damage can make hair more porous and rough, ultimately leading to faded, brittle, and dry strands. "You are essentially damaging your hair to get a lighter hair color," Dr. Liu stated, urging viewers to avoid such DIY methods for hair lightening.
