Thunder Bay, ON Local environmental organization EcoSuperior is actively promoting the installation of rain gardens among homeowners, offering a significant rebate program to encourage participation. The initiative aims to enhance urban water management and mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall. In a recent demonstration, an EcoSuperior representative showcased a functioning rain garden during a rainy day in Thunder Bay. "This one catches rainwater from our roof," the presenter explained, pointing to a lush garden visibly full of water, "and as you can see, it is full. Up to your mid-calf to be exact." The video then illustrated the garden's efficiency, showing it completely drained less than 24 hours later. The organization emphasizes the crucial role of rain gardens in preventing localized flooding. "Without a rain garden, where would all that water go? It could flood your yard, it could flood the streets," the representative stated, highlighting the potential for property damage and strain on municipal infrastructure. Instead, rain gardens allow rainwater to soak naturally into the ground, "just as nature intended." EcoSuperior is offering homeowners up to $625 in rebates for installing a rain garden, with limited spots still available. The program seeks to empower residents to adopt eco-friendly practices that contribute to a healthier urban environment and improved water conservation. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact EcoSuperior for more details on how to participate.
