Spain's Military Emergency Unit Gears Up for Summer Wildfire Season CORDOVA, Spain—As summer approaches, Spain is bracing for the annual threat of devastating wildfires. The Military Emergency Unit (UME), a specialized force dedicated to disaster relief, is stepping up its preparations. A recent training exercise in the mountains of Córdoba showcased the UME's readiness. Over 3,000 personnel participated, utilizing a range of equipment, including specialized vehicles and aircraft. "We are finalizing training, preparing equipment, and instructing personnel to effectively and safely tackle the summer campaign," explained Captain Enrique Francos of the UME's Second Battalion. The training focused on practical skills, such as using water pumps and creating firebreaks. The UME also utilizes helicopters and planes for aerial fire suppression. Luis Ortega, EFE delegate in Córdoba, observed the exercises and highlighted the scale of the challenge. "Last year's fires scorched over 47,000 hectares of land," he stated. The UME's preparedness is crucial to minimizing the impact of future wildfires. The extensive training and the deployment of over 3,000 personnel demonstrate Spain's commitment to protecting its natural resources and ensuring the safety of its citizens during the high-risk summer months.
