Mexico City's Security Chief Reports Stunning Drop in Homicides, Massive Drug Seizure
Mexico City Sees Sharp Drop in Homicides Amidst Major Drug Bust Mexico City is experiencing a significant decrease in homicides, alongside a major crackdown on drug trafficking, according to a recent report by Omar García Harfuch, the city's security chief. The report, presented in a press conference, revealed a 33.4% reduction in homicides since October 2024, along with the impressive seizure of 172 tons of drugs and 12,000 firearms. "These results represent a significant economic blow to criminal groups," Harfuch stated. The success is attributed to increased collaboration between various federal agencies. The report also detailed the dismantling of 994 clandestine drug laboratories and the arrest of 23,417 individuals for high-impact crimes. The operation, dubbed "Frontera Norte," has further strengthened security along the city's borders, resulting in an additional 4,180 arrests, 3,426 firearms, and over half a million cartridges seized since February 5th. These combined efforts showcase a determined approach to combating crime and improving public safety in Mexico City.
