Chile's President Boric Confirms Pension Increase to 250,000 Pesos for Elderly

Santiago, Chile President Gabriel Boric announced today the imminent payment of an increased Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU) of 250,000 Chilean pesos, specifically targeting citizens aged 82 and older. The announcement, made during a public address, marks a significant step in the government's social agenda. "We are happy because tomorrow begins the payment of the PGU, which rises to 250,000 pesos for those over 82 years old," President Boric stated, emphasizing the fulfillment of a key promise made upon his administration taking office. He further elaborated on the challenging legislative process, noting, "This was one of the main promises we made to the country upon arriving at La Moneda, and thanks to the pension reform... some invited us to put it aside because there was no agreement, but we persevered with this and managed to push it forward." The President highlighted the collaborative effort across political spectrums, stating, "With good politics, with transversal agreements, where people from both sides, from different positions, dared not to have 100% of what they wanted, but thinking of the Chileans who need it, we reached a meeting point." He added that this reform would provide "more substantive pensions and deliver greater dignity" to older adults who have dedicated their lives to work. Boric concluded by expressing optimism for the month of September, referring to it as "the month of the homeland," and promised more good news for Chileans, including certainties in health and continued government efforts to improve the well-being and quality of life for the populace. The payment is set to begin tomorrow, with the President scheduled to share the moment with many seniors at the Palacio de Gobierno.
