Mexico Reports Significant Drop in Homicides Mexico City – In a significant development, the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) announced a substantial decrease in intentional homicides across Mexico. The report, presented by SESNSP head Marcela Figueroa, revealed a 25.8% reduction in May 2025 compared to the same month last year. This marks the lowest average daily homicide rate for the month of May since 2016. Figueroa highlighted the data's source: "This information comes from the 32 state prosecutor's offices across the country." She also emphasized the sustained downward trend, stating, "We can report that this month concluded with a monthly average of 64.5 daily homicides." This represents a considerable drop from the 86.9 daily average recorded in September 2024. The report offers hope for a continued decline in violent crime, although challenges remain. The consistent data collection and transparent reporting by the SESNSP provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of crime-reduction strategies.
