Former Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina Faces Revocation of Benefits Over Unpaid Q4 Million Reparations
Guatemala City, Guatemala – Former Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina appeared before the High-Risk Court B at the Tower of Tribunals on Tuesday, addressing his failure to pay Q4 million (approximately USD 515,000) in reparations to the State. The Public Ministry has requested the partial revocation of penal benefits he obtained after pleading guilty in the "Cooptación del Estado" case, citing his non-compliance with the payment deadline of May 31, 2024.Upon his arrival at the court, Pérez Molina explained the reason for the outstanding payment. He stated, "My bank account, where I received my salary, continues to be embargoed, which, according to my defense, prevents me from making the payment."The court is now tasked with analyzing the arguments presented by both the Public Ministry and Pérez Molina's defense. The judge's decision will determine whether the former president loses his previously granted benefits and potentially returns to prison. As of now, the unpaid reparations remain the central point of contention in the ongoing legal proceedings.
